Periodontal Principles in Implant Dentistry: The Missing Link (Belfast, 24 September 2026)

As the global placement of dental implants continues to rise, peri-implant disease remains a central challenge to long-term implant success. This lecture foregrounds the critical role of the periodontist in implant therapy decision-making and treatment in biologic principles rather than simply placing a hardware. We will be discussing how to Locate implant planning within the context of existing periodontal disease and periodontal health history, recognizing how periodontitis and systemic factors influence esthetic outcomes and implant stability. This aligns with cross-journal consensus that periodontitis is a meaningful risk indicator for peri-implant disease, and that optimizing periodontal health prior to and during implant care improves prognosis (Zitzmann & Berglundh, 2008).

The lector of this course is Dr. Lobna Alghazal. Dr. Lobna Alghazal distinguished herself as one of the top students at Benghazi University (UOB), where she completed her five-year dental degree. Following graduation, she gained valuable clinical experience over four years as a general dentist. Inspired by her mother and sister—both specialist periodontists trained at Trinity University—she chose to pursue a career in Periodontology, continuing a strong family legacy in the field.

The lecture will also demonstrate how to apply periodontal principles to bone and soft tissue management to achieve better esthetic results, proper tissue support, and functional stability around implants. Long-term maintenance, prevention, and early detection, supportive care after peri-implant therapy can reduce recurrence or progression. Regular recalls tailored to individual risk profiles, including plaque control and systemic risk management (e.g., glycemic control, smoking cessation), are consistently recommended to support implant longevity.
