About

My name is Ionescu Alexandru and I am a general dentist from Targu-Jiu, Romania. A phrase that would characterize me well is that I am a "Dentist with a lifelong passion for design".

🎙 The Interview

Q1 Tell us about your journey into dentistry. What inspired you to choose this profession?

My mother recognized my passion for chemistry and the human body and guided me towards medicine. I chose Dentistry because it seemed more attractive to me.

Q2 What does your typical working day look like?

I have 1-2 appointments in the morning, then I go pick up my son from school and try to spend some time with my wife and kids. Then I go back to the office and work until late evening with short pauses for rest and eating.

Q3 What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

Seeing people smile in an ever-changing world and making a small contribution to their overall health.

Q4 How has dentistry changed since you started your career?

It became more and more digitalized and in most ways that's a good thing. You have to keep up!

Q5 What technologies or techniques have had the biggest impact on your practice?

Probably the magnification systems. I am a big fan of loupes. So far I haven't bought a dental microscope but I will probably make that purchase some day.

Q6 What advice would you give to dental students just starting out?

Do the best work you can do and live your best life. Don't follow obsessively the money, just make great dental work and good things will follow.

Q7 What are the biggest challenges facing dentistry today?

Corporatization in my opinion. Not a big fan of that. For some dentists it works for some it doesn't. I think it takes the personal touch out of the dentist-patient relationship.

Q8 How do you stay up to date with the latest developments in your field?

I follow everything. Every website, every newsletter, every Facebook page, YouTube channel, magazine, you name it. It's an exaggeration, of course, but you get the idea.

Q9 What conferences or courses do you recommend for continuing education?

I am a big fan of recorder online courses because you can watch them in your own pace and in your own free time. Other than that the big FDI events and generally I would recommend going to at least 2-3 big conferences every year.

Q10 What is your vision for the future of dentistry?

Well hopefully AI will not play a huge part in the future of dentistry although it does bring some advantages. I would like to see better and better imaging solutions. Just recently Dentsply Sirona released the first dental-specific MRI machine, so that's exciting. Better imaging helps with better diagnostics and better results. Hopefully the dental offices of the future will have access to amazing and affordable imaging technologies to provide better treatments for the patients.
